20CrNiMo is a low-carbon alloy steel designed for carburizing (case hardening). It typically contains chromium and nickel (plus molybdenum) to improve hardenability and core toughness after heat treatment.
Case hardening adds carbon to the surface layer during heat treatment, then the ball is quenched and tempered. The surface becomes very hard for wear resistance, while the core remains tougher to absorb impact.
Difference: GCr15 is usually through-hardened and widely used for bearings with high hardness and good fatigue life. 20CrNiMo is often chosen when impact resistance and core toughness are more critical, especially for shock-loaded conditions.
